@bjhess Resurfacing is exactly what makes the open web superior to all closed systems! The fatal flaw of Facebook and others is that although there is all sorts of new relevant content surfaced via tha algorithm, it's next to impossible to find older content more than a few days old.

@chrisfoley
@pratik I've done the same. The worst offender is the web version of Outlook, which uses a microscopic font size.

@bjhess Thanks for a great article! I've been blogging since 2005 and followed independent bloggers for years before that.
But here's my problem. I work in the arts, which is an industry where many of the important discussions are happening on Facebook. I have over 3200 friends there (~2500 of whom are musicians), and the algorithm surfaces genuinely engaging content that has real relevance to both my immediate circle of friends and important discussions within the industry that aren't happening elsewhere. Since I've been posting relatively regularly since 2008, the algorithm seems to be surfacing my own content on other people's feeds quite regularly. I'm trying to maintain a presence on my independent blogs alongside activities on Facebook, but it's always an uphill battle.

@KimberlyHirsh That's what I gleaned from the article and the study it referenced. Time to hit the fiction!
Chris Foley
@chrisfoley
@KimberlyHirsh This is a fascinating study! If the effect for reading fiction was .14 (small, but noticeable) and was reportedly slightly higher than for reading non-fiction, I wonder what the non-fiction effect size would have been, and whether or not the difference between the two would be significant. Perhaps it's reading in general that causes the positive cognitive effects.

@ayjay There's nothing like a mechanical metronome! Although it's easier to find a digital version (even Google has an online metronome), mechanical metronomes are making a comeback, and I've seen them on sale for $150+.

Finished reading: Learn Like a Pro by Barbara Oakley PhD 📚
This was a really practical book that I’ll be putting to use in my own learning and teaching. I first found out about Barbara Oakley’s work on Ben Owden’s Why Lead? podcast. Highly recommended.

@numericcitizen I agree completely. Blogrolls are and always were a popularity contest. All we can do is create a curated list that shows diversity of scope and background, as well as genuine quality that will rope others into reading (and eventually writing) blogs. Just like 15-20 years ago.

There is no rulebook in this world that says we have to toughen up and be thick like hide. This is the sort of insidious narrative that is causing so much unnecessary suffering in this world, because we are all afraid to be our true selves openly in this world. So we suppress and repress, and we knowingly and unknowingly hurt each other like this. In my opinion, it is better to be a weak buttercup that is mindful of the presence of the other buttercups in this world. That to me, is strength.

Christopher Isham on Closer to Truth looks at the question of whether time is fundamental:
How deep goes time? Is time bedrock reality, part of the fundamental fabric of reality? Or is time an emergent thing, generated by deeper truths of existence? What is the place of time in deep physical laws like relativity and quantum mechanics? Can we get to the bottom of time?
