The first thing we did after landing in Iceland was to go view this volcano spewing lava. I can’t believe that I actually got to see this from such close proximity - only about a km away. The roads in the area are closed (as expected) so couldn’t go closer.
Both kids are back at their respective colleges and we are back to being empty nesters! ☹️🙁😕🫤😐😬🙂✌🏼
Last day before vacation is always super busy and stressful.
Today is day 2 of sophomore year for my son. As always, I am amazed by the diversity of classes he is taking this Fall semester:
- Music in western civilization
- Physics 2
- Economics
- Biochemistry

@stupendousman This wasn’t even in I-95 corridor. We started traveling from Davidson, NC on I-77 then onto I-81 through western VA. Can’t believe how many huge crosses and confederate flags I spotted in VA.
@Parag We lost a little over one hour in this incident but, no more major traffic issues on rest of the way to home. 750 miles in about 13 hours including that delay and refueling breaks. Not bad!
@pratik Oh no! That is terrible. Mayo it is better to have happened sooner than later with more toxic drama. Good luck for the next chapter.
Started on our 750 mile drive back home. We are not even 20 miles in and now stuck on the highway with an accident ahead of us. Have turned off the car about 40 minutes ago. Not a good start.

Drove all the way to outer banks region of North Carolina. Getting through New York area was tough but it was a pleasant drive after that. Going through DelMarVa area after a long time. It was so nice! The Chesapeake bay bridge/tunnel is so impressive.
OMG! Bill Clinton seems really old. I remember his first campaign for president in 1992. He was so charming and charismatic.
@pratik She was incredible but I really liked the last 10-15 minutes of Barack’s speech from the point where he started talking about his mother in law. That emotion and worldview resonated with me. He put in words how I feel but didn’t know how to say it.
The Obamas really fired up the DNC tonight. 🔥
Watching the weather for the last few days as we will be going to North Carolina for dropping off my son at his college. Atlantic ocean seems calm all the way to Africa with no storms brewing. I suppose our trip will be without any weather event.

Last day for my daughter as a summer intern at my work and last day of carpooling with her. Can’t believe 10 weeks just zoomed by but, I am glad that she was able to have this research experience and I got to spend all these commuting hours with her.
@numericcitizen Easy answer is I miss food from India, most importantly mangoes. But, what I really miss about India is the India from 33 years ago. That doesn't exist anymore.
Hate is a very strong emotion and I rarely use that word. But, what I hate about the US is trump and musk and all this culture war garbage. It didn't exist 33 years ago when I first came here.
I realize this makes me sound like a grumpy old man pining for the good old days. 😒
@stupendousman Well.... It is a nod to lyrics from a Grateful Dead song - Truckin'. But, TBH this life was not what I imagined I'd be living when I was growing up. Some times it does feel unreal and strange. I mean... me with a great wife and two college-age kids? Really? How did we get here?

50th outdoor bike ride of this year as I commuted to work this morning. I like to do more outdoors riding but, this Spring/Summer has been so wet and that limited the number of opportunities. Also, I am getting older and lazier. 🙄
Mars and Jupiter conjunction seen this morning (aug 15). They were less than half a degree apart - less than the size of full Moon in the sky. Three moons of Jupiter are visible. Ganymede on the left, Europa and Callisto on the right.
As always, I was successful in capturing decent looking startrails while trying for Perseid meteors.

@stupendousman ha ha ha! It has been working out well this Summer. It is nice that they are growing up to be responsible adults - not kids anymore but, I still keep calling them kids.

@pratik I have to push them to do the dishwasher but, they happily go to the grocery store so they can get whatever (cookies, ice cream etc) they want on top of what's on the list.
Having 2 college-going kids at home for Summer has been so nice. I haven’t gone grocery shopping since end of May. I add stuff to a shared list in iPhone app and it shows up. They have taken over the dishwasher duty, too. But, this is going to end soon and I’ll be back to doing my chores. 🙄

It was a pleasant night to be out looking for northern lights. Didn’t spot any but it was such a clear night, the Milky Way was shining brightly.
@Miraz Fantastic! It is so cool to see the lights. We were lucky to see them back in May. It was cloudy last night but, tonight seems clear. Hope to catch them along with some Perseid meteors.
@stupendousman Nope. But, we are getting bombarded with high energy particles from the coronal mass ejections and that is generating some nice Aurora displays. Tonight is going to be great for that here in New England. Hoping for clear skis!!! 🤞🤞

Cocktail of this weekend is mezcal negroni.
First it was the IPL then T20 world cup, the Giro d’Italia followed by Tour de France and now Olympics!!! I have been watching so much sports on TV. Feels like my brain is getting saturated and want no more sports. But but but… Vuelta and Cycling world championship are just around the corner.
