@paultibbetts Looks like a fine day!

@JohnPhilpin To your point though, yes, there are examples of that, especially when it comes to more easily measured things, like the height of waterfalls or mountains and such. But there's also a long standing tradition of calling tourist traps "The World's Largest (blank)," whether it is or not.

On This Day in 2007 we visited the birthplace of George Washington Carver, and were visited by this checkerboard-eyed butterfly during our walk there.

One of the highlights of our visit to Halifax was the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, housed in the same dock building that served as the port of entry for immigrants. I was surprised at many of the similarities between the histories of immigration in Canada and the United States.

OTD in 2018, I hiked to Exit Glacier, my first experience with a glacier. It’s iconic for the signs showing the previous extent of the glacier in various years, clearly demonstrating how quickly the ice has receded.

I’ve been to every national park unit in the US, and this remains my most favorite park sign anywhere. It’s located on the back side of the entrance sign for the Exit Glacier area of Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska.

Remember when Japan bombed Nebraska during WWII? You Don’t?
Well, On This Day in 2021, we visited the site where it happened.

My buddy Mikah’s short film “Canyon Chorus” is playing at the Flagstaff Film Festival in September, and he’ll be there to speak live, too. You can also watch it on his website.

On This Day in 2021, I visited the shack and farm of Aldo Leopold—one of America’s greatest figures, whose ideas helped change the way we view the natural environment and preserving America’s natural heritage.

I wrote a bit about The Two Futures of Social Media: as social media fractures, two distinct futures are unfolding—two entirely different ways to participate socially online, a fundamental divide between viral entertainment and personal community.

@curmudgeonaf I don't have a dog in this fight, but my understanding is that while some other teams in Pittsburg were paying players, that the first pro hockey league was indeed in Houghton. That seems like the birth of "pro hockey" as opposed to simply some teams that were "cheating" prior to that. Either way, it was fun to visit.

It doesn’t look like much, but this marker—located in a headwater swamp in Arkansas, of all places—preserves the initial point from which all surveys of property acquired from the Louisiana Purchase originated.
We visited it OTD in 2008 on a whim; I really need to write more about that experience.

@jthingelstad what time should I come over? 🤤

One of my favorite roadtrip apps is Roadside America, which lists weird roadside attractions. An earlier version of the app included a fun feature: a fake “call” set by a timer to help give you an excuse to leave an awkward or excessively long conversation at an attraction, which I used OTD in 2012.

A Sense of Belonging. A lovely little post by @alexskunz@mas.to on how he’s rooted himself to San Diego County.
I’ve “grown roots” here also through the connection with the landscape, the chaparral ecosystem, and its plants.

@pratik many a 17 yr old has done stranger things to impress a love interest. Or maybe he lost a bet. Or maybe to prove someone wrong. Or to piss off his dad. Or someone did it in his name to piss him off. I have no idea why, of course, but it’s hard to parse out without finding it in his own words

@pratik I don't think that it prevents Libby from loaning it out to the next person. I guess I haven't specifically tested that before, but I believe you can also disconnect your device from wifi and return the item early from the libby app on another device, but continue reading on the original disconnected device. That leads me to believe that it's not holding up libby from loaning it back out.

@bjhess I did the other side of the canyon, but immediately called it the angriest waterfall I’d ever seen. What a great experience!
