I’ve been taking this same photo for the past three days in the morning. The backlighting against the still shaded shrub understory + the white and purple flowers is superb. I even love the lens flare.

June 22, 2024

Morning light streaming through and backlighting a stand of budded up and opening double white Shasta daises, a purple salvia, and the green to red tinged new foliage of a large crape myrtle shrub.

I took the same photo this morning and this evening from the same spot. Not exactly lined up, but close enough.

This is the sun-loving perennial border in my backyard on the first day of summer.

A side-by-side view of a narrow flower bed bursting with flowers of all colors, one in the morning sun and the other backlit in the evening light.

Reading any piece about Long Covid is a bit traumatic for me as it reflects and reminds me of my own course of illness, with similar disbelief and neglect, and little hope of recovery.

As a medical anthropologist working in global health, I thought I understood the despair of poor health. I didn’t. I join 7% of the U.S. adult population — or about 18 million Americans — who have experienced long Covid.

@SimonWoods it's been hard to square the "why aren't you as upset about X as AI?" (where X is another problem not X and not that X is not a problem...) when AI will serve to exasperate all our other problems exponentially

@Mtt Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with humans.txt but I always considered that more for professional projects comprised of team members, or even for someone's own site. I guess I view it as strange for a personal blog, but I guess it can be up to each person to leave it in place or remove it if they know about it.

@anniegreens This walkway is possibly no longer in existence? What a shame! Stunning sunset views from this point, but I understand that the land is unstable, hence the elevated wooden walkway. I have not been to Ecola State Park in several years so I'm only going by the maps I see online and I no longer see this trail.

@anniegreens I'll tell you what I especially appreciate about this particular hardy geranium, because there are many popular and lovely purple-blue hardy geraniums on the market: the color of the foliage is such a unique color that adds a differing color/texture to your garden beds that might be mostly "green" and the bloom stems, which are loaded with many buds/flowers, are sturdy and do not flop.

@anniegreens I wrote about community on my weblog, here are my non-negotiables:

  1. A shared piece of oneself, something in common.
  2. Willingness to listen before judging or offering advice or criticism.
  3. Humbleness and concessions when proven wrong or hurtful.
  4. Realism, positive or negative; both must be allowed.
  5. Acceptance of boundaries; infractions must require steps to resolve.
  6. Belief in each other's self, as identified.

As you can see, number six calls out identity as seen by someone's self is none of your business and I can't create a meaningless veneer of community if that's up for argument.
